Nagios is a host and service monitor designed to inform you of network problems before your clients, end-users or managers do. It has been designed to run under the Linux operating system, but works fine under most *NIX variants as well.
We use Netsaint to monitor over 250 hosts and 1,200 services. The plugin nature of Netsaint is fantastic allowing us to write many perl and shell scripts that handle checks specific to our network. Netsaint now handles escalations as well. We decided to go with Netsaint over Netcool, an amazingly expensive product that can do slightly more but no better than Netsaint.
