ImPress - A vector based drawing and publishing program.

Updated by FastRunner on Wednesday, April 10th 2002.ImPress Screenshot

ImPressTM is a WYSIWYG layout program designed especially for Linux. It allows you to create presentations and Postscript documents using fully scalable graphics similar to programs like Macromedia Freehand, Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator and Visio. It is different from raster graphic packages like gimp, Adobe PhotoShop and Jasc's PaintShop Pro in that it deals with graphical objects which can be manipulated on a canvas rather than just layers of paint.

Impress 1.1-0.beta.3

Objects are easy to create, but there are no templates for objects (besides the basic ones).
Snap to grid and moving objects is very good.(Very good for a picture collage). But there is no visible grid.
The canvas is clean and big.
Changing object properties like object color is a hassle (you have to write the color name, eventhough there is a nice colorpicker). Changing the color seems to work only for newly create objects. (cannot select an object and chose another color)
Imported Images cannot be resized/outlined/coloured/etc but transparencies are handled correctly. And there is a list of imported images, which is handy for reselecting them.

Right click doesnt do anything.
No hotkeys.
No zoom/preview.
No copy (it has cut and paste, though)
Selecting Z-order is front/background only, so in order to set 3 items in the correct order, you have to click a bit.
Canvas scrolling can only be done with the scrollbar.

Verdict: Has a couple of good ideas but it still looks unfinished. So lets wait for the next release.
