XFree86 - Implementation of the X Window System.

The XFree86 Project, Inc is a non-profit organisation that produces XFree86. XFree86 is a freely redistributable implementation of the X Window System that runs on UNIX(R) and UNIX-like operating systems (and OS/2).

XFree86 provides a client/server interface between the display hardware (those physical things like the mouse, keyboard, and video displays) and the desktop environment, (this is typically called a window manager as it deals with how X is displayed i.e. the overall appearance). XFree86 also gives the infrastructure and a standardized application interface (API).
