Evo 2.2.x needs some stability fixes | | | |
Wednesday, October 12th, 2005 - Anonymous Post.Currently using multiple Evolution versions, most recently 2.2.1. Upgraded from two boxes, one running Evo 1.4.6 with ximian-connector for MS Exchange Server, and another one running Evo 2.0.3 with ximian-connector. 2.0.3 was a noticeable improvement with respect to stability (1.4 had issues with ximian-connector bombing). All looked good in the Evolution universe.
Then came Evolution 2.2.x. When accessing Exchange Server folders, it works, but I find it less stable and somewhat slower than Evo 2.0.x. 2.2.x tends to die and hang a lot compared to 2.0.x. The stability issue is present on both SuSE Linux Pro 9.3 and Ubuntu Linux 5.0.4 "Hoary Hedgehog." However, on two other boxes running CentOS 4 and SuSE Linux Pro 9.2, Evo 2.0.x + ximian-connector seems to be fine.
Virtually all of the stability issues that I've seen with Evolution over the years relate to the MS Exchange Server connector. I hope that these issues have been fixed in 2.4.x, because I *really* don't want to use Microsoft LookOut. Sadly, I'm in a so-called "Microsoft shop." I'm going to just stick with Evo 2.0.x for a while until I can test out 2.4.x.
Note that, as a straight IMAP client, all versions of Evolution that I've ever used have been a pleasure to work with, from v1.0.3 on. The junk-mail filter takes some time to train--a few weeks--but it seems to be catching about 90-95% of junk mail now. It is quite stable in IMAP mode and is quite sufficiently feature-filled for my needs.
