7 commentsEvolution - Buggy!
It's great if all you do is check your pop email --otherwise? forget it. As soon as you have one bug appear, the entire thing is completely unstable and unreliable. What the hell are the developers doing?! Fix the BUGS then add features.
Evo 2.2.x needs some stability fixes
Currently using multiple Evolution versions, most recently 2.2.1. Upgraded from two boxes, one running Evo 1.4.6 with ximian-connector for MS Exchange Server, and another one running Evo 2.0.3 with ximian-connector. 2.0.3 was a noticeable improvement with respect to stability (1.4 had issues with ximian-connector bombing). All looked good in the Evolution universe. Then came Evolution 2.2.x. When accessing Exchange Server folders, it works, but I find it less stable and somewhat slower than Evo 2.0.x. 2.2.x tends to die and hang a lot compared to 2.0.x. The stability issue is present on both SuSE Linux Pro 9.3 and Ubuntu Linux 5.0.4 "Hoary Hedgehog." However, on two other boxes running CentOS 4 and SuSE Linux Pro 9.2, Evo 2.0.x + ximian-connector seems to be fine. Virtually all of the stability issues that I've seen with Evolution over the years relate to the MS Exchange Server connector. I hope that these issues have been fixed in 2.4.x, because I *really* don't want to use Microsoft LookOut. Sadly, I'm in a so-called "Microsoft shop." I'm going to just stick with Evo 2.0.x for a while until I can test out 2.4.x. Note that, as a straight IMAP client, all versions of Evolution that I've ever used have been a pleasure to work with, from v1.0.3 on. The junk-mail filter takes some time to train--a few weeks--but it seems to be catching about 90-95% of junk mail now. It is quite stable in IMAP mode and is quite sufficiently feature-filled for my needs.
This one really Outshines MS Outlook in (m)any way(s) !
To me, this is probably the strongest application in Gnome world. Too bad it doesn't do news, otherwise it's IMHO one of the greatest apps for Linux at the moment. One of remaining quirks is unstability. Program can corrupt its database and crash on any subsequent restart, when it reads its folders automatically. (Both versions- 1.4.5 as well as 1.4.6) But I have found workarounds and I hope new versions willl fix it...
Best
As version 1.4.3 fixed the mail receiving bug running under Mandrake 9.1, it is now working flawlessly for me. It looks gorgeous and is extremely versatile. I can now make a compete transition from Windows to Linux without having to miss Outlook again.
Excellent!
Evolution is easily the killer application for the Linux Desktop. If you have a use for Star Office, this is the complimentary application for you! Outlook is easily one of Microsoft's better applications. Ximian with Evolution is clearly nipping at their heels. I'm currently using it with POP3 and IMAP and GPG. It rocks. The only problem I have is that it seems to have some GPG bugs (v1.02). It incorrectly reports bad message signatures when they are really valid. I'm very much looking forward to 1.03 being made available via Red Carpet. If you are looking for an excellent mail application and you use Gnome, this is the application for you!
Poor
It's OK, but a lot of it doesn't work. Continually displays weird behaviour. Needs years of work before it can even hope to compare to Outlook (which is pretty crap itself).
Greatest mail client ever
This is the greatest Groupware suite/mail client ever. I've been using it since 0.4 and every release it becomes a ton more amazing. My only complaint is that I can't yet tell it to always send my personal vcard in my outgoing messages. If you're looking for an Outlook replacement for Linux, this is it!
