Ghost is an open source content management system for publishing a website and sending email newsletters. It brings posts, pages, member sign-ups, and paid subscriptions into one publication, so an independent writer or editorial team can manage web and email content from the same place.
The editor supports images, embeds, and other rich content. A post can appear on the site, go out as a newsletter, or do both. Publishers can offer free and paid memberships, restrict selected content to members, and manage multiple newsletters. Ghost also supports custom themes and an API for teams that want more control over their site's design or integrations.
Ghost can be self-hosted on Linux or used through Ghost(Pro), its managed hosting service. The official self-hosting guidance recommends Ubuntu, Node.js, MySQL, NGINX, and at least 1 GB of memory. That stack gives you control over the site and its data, but it also leaves server maintenance, upgrades, and email delivery setup in your hands. Ghost(Pro) handles hosting for teams that prefer a managed service.
Ghost is a good fit when publishing, newsletters, and memberships are central to the site. If you only need a simple static website, its server and email setup may be more than the job requires.
