For establishing your most used workstation, this is THE dist to use. Most configs are quickly maint. This is on both laptops and workstation, due too versatility. Probably not the best for quick server though.
This would be my favorite if they didn't keep hiding things from me. It takes much too long to figure out which strangely named parameter needs to be stroked to make the system work the way I want. For example, it took me several hours to make X accept my serial mouse.
After I bought the new SUSE 7.2 release,I have to confess that except of some features it becomes more and more a real practicable Windows alternative. Based on the fact that I like to "work" with my PC, I would rather install both OS than having only Windows running on it. I expect that Linux will become a competetive alternative as a standing alone desktop system with SUSE Linux 9.x - just in this moment, I won't install several OSs on my PC :)
Suse 7.2 is overall very good. Wish thought that all the packages were reasonably fresh. Some are quite old and quite obsolete. For example "FlightGear", and several others. After all the two leading reasons to purchase a Linux distribution are: 1) Easy install of a good Lixux, not too old. Suse excelles there. 2) A wealth of application without having to download too many: from CD or DVD. Given the quality (very good stable Linux), I will certainly purchase Suse again, but next time, I may just buy the cheaper (minimum) slim version, rather than buying the "professional" version. It is possible that other distributions have similar problems. Thanks for your attention.
After almost 10 years of hacking different GUIs from GEM to GEO I am glad that the linux movement is coming of age. X-window; KDE; and YAST were made for each other. I haven't upgraded since 7.0 and still have not had time to try the many apps that come with the Pro pack. I have it in a CTX LAPTOP P200 with 24meg of ram and 2g HD and dual pcmcia that work great. This has become my main workstation on the road and it doesn't crash as much as my CTX WINBook P266 32meg ram with winmodem. It is still needed for the 4yearold to play the games that GrandMa keeps getting at EBX. Maybe she'll buy X.P. for each of my 6 PCs. NOT
* Overall very good. * Update from 7.2 not good at all! Regret did not integrate more recent of KDE, but realize this is difficult. A quite solid distribution.
I would have to say that SuSE is way better than any other distribution. I've tested both Mandrake 8.1 and Redhat 7.2 which are way behind in certan areas, especially redhat. SuSE Online Update feature is very awesome. I have updated the KDE and glibc and many other programs this way. very convienient. YAST rocks!. YAST is suse's graphical administration/configuration tool which is nicely integrated in the KDE control center (can be run independent as well). This tools let you add hardware lightning fast, configure firewalls, update software, and much much more. Even tough SuSE uses rpm, they have dependancy checks which means that if you select to install a software which required something you don't have installed, it will automatically selected the dependency packages for you. Nice. One last thing, the default installation looks very professional. The best looking dist so far. Cheerz Magnus Jonsson Sweden
Exelent linux operating enviroment great for the beginner and hard core user alike !!!!!
SuSE 8.0 is by far the best Linux distro. I ran Mandrake 8.2 which I loved, but SuSE 8.0 won me over once I learned that I had to edit my hp.conf file in /etc/sane.d in order to get my HP 4100c scanner to work. Other than that problem I would have always ran SuSE. SuSE is the easiest install, has the best Online Update in YAST control center, and was reasonably priced not to mention it is the most pleasing to the eyes...it is simply a beautiful and stable OS. Except for the fact I don't know how to make CD slide shows with music as in Photo Relay for Windows, I would abandon Windows completely and be strickly a SuSE Linux man!!! Lloyd in Kentucky
SuSE version 8.0 is a great distribution, both easy to setup and powerful. The 'Personal' version allows newcomers to experience SuSE Linux without being overwhelmed by too many packages, and also to setup a workstation with relative ease. The 'Professional' version includes everything you need to run a variety of server scenarios. Overall SuSE Linux out performs other distributions, including many nice features, such as Yast Online Update. I'd recommend it to Linux newcomers and hard core users too!
Out of RedHat6-9x, Mandrake8-9x and SuSE7-8.x installations on a few different computers I liked the SuSE8.2 installation the best. With Win9x partition and a second hard drive SuSE8.2 was the smoothest to install. Ati tvtuner card, nvidia (yast2 updated the driver afterwards), cd-rw, brother-hl1230 printer, sound and nic were all found and configured. Realaudio, mozilla, flash and java installed by without me doing anything. Nice job SuSE.
